The steels listed in the different parts of EN 10016 are vital starting materials for high quality forgings. When we talk about “different types” of forging. We’re talking about the grades of material and their properties. Here are the key categories:-

Carbon Steel (EN 10016-2) :

These are basic grades with good formability and weldability. These types are applied to common engineering for forging works, not for high strength or special purpose. Eg grades such as C15, C35 and C45 etc. That letter refers to the approximate percentage of carbon by weight (e.g. C45 means -0.45% carbon) and it is also a number we can use to anticipate the hardness and strength we can attain with a simple heat treatment following hot forging.

Steels for other applications (EN 10016-3 & -4) :

This includes alloy steels with Cr, Mo, Mn and Ni added for improved properties. These are the high performance work horses for forging.

Chromium – Molybdenum Steels (such as 42CrMo4); Good choice for high strength, high toughness applications. They harden readily by heat treatment (quench and temper) and are used for critical parts, such as automotive crankshafts, connecting rods and gears.

Chromium Steels (34Cr4 as example); They have good hardenability and a high wear resistance.

Other alloys; Such as the nickel chromium molybdenum steels are used when good core properties are required in big sections – more demanding usages.

Case-Hardening Steels (EN 10016-4) :

They are low carbon alloy steels for forging (e.g. 16MnCr5, 20NiCrMo2) and subsequent case hardening. This results in a very hard, wear resistant surface while retaining a tough, ductile core. Ideal for gears, Camshafts and transmission components that experience heavy wear and impact loads.

Free-Cutting Steels (EN10016-5) :

Grades such as 35S20 however also contain sulphur or other additions for machinability. They can be formed into shapes that will need substantial secondary machining, because the additives help to break chips and minimise tool wear.

So when you source “EN 10016 for forgings” you are making a choice between these grade lists – carbon, alloy, case-hardening free-cutting steels based on the mechanical properties, the heat treatment possibilities and the final applications of the forged part. The selection of material serves as the preliminary and essential step of achieving the forging characteristics.
